Zonta, Scoville Jewelers
to sponsor Breast Cancer Awareness Night Oct. 20
GLENS FALLS — In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Zonta Club of
Glens Falls and Scoville Jewelers will sponsor a Breast Cancer Awareness Night
on Friday, Oct. 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the jeweler’s 167 Glen Street location in
downtown Glens Falls to benefit Glens Falls Hospital’s C.R. Wood Cancer Center.
In addition to its full line of jewelry on sale that evening, Scoville Jewelers
will have many pieces of fine jewelry honoring breast cancer survivors available
— breast cancer Christmas ornaments by Reed and Barton, silver key holders,
cancer survivor tie tacks and pendants designed by Scoville Jewelers and cancer
survivor bracelets by a local designer.
Attendees can also participate in the event’s “Pop a Gem” contest. Pink balloons
will be on sale, with each balloon containing a gem — and a diamond hidden in
one coveted balloon.
The evening’s goal is to raise awareness and lend financial support to the C.R.
Wood Cancer Center’s Image Fund. Scoville Jewelers will donate 50 percent of the
profits from the evening’s sales to the Image Fund, specifically for breast
cancer patients in the Glens Falls area. The Image Fund supports the Cancer
Center’s Uniquely You Boutique and Salon, a free service for cancer patients. A
licensed beautician provides patients with hair and skin care. Patients can also
choose from a selection of wigs, scarves, hats and turbans.
Linda Lansburg, RN, OCN, oncology resource nurse, and Sandra Jeroulis, RN,
Breast Center, will be present throughout the evening to provide informational
handouts and answer questions on topics ranging from breast cancer prevention to
mammograms.
Zontians will also be in attendance to answer any questions the community might
have regarding the service organization and membership criteria. Zonta is a
501c3 international professional women’s organization. Its mission statement is
to improve the betterment of women and children’s health and education. Zonta is
able to give back to the community through the money raised from its three
annual fundraisers: Country Faire, held in conjunction with the LARAC Festival;
The All Women’s Golf Tournament held in June; and a food booth at the Adirondack
Balloon Festival.
Zonta’s community donations include: $4,000 in annual donations to the C. R.
Wood Cancer Center’s Image Fund; Family Services Dental Project; $2,000 in
donations to Glens Falls Medical Mission to Guatemala for pap smears; Adirondack
Girl Scouts, for the past two years awarding camp scholarships for girls
otherwise unable to attend camp and awarding financial scholarships to area
graduates each June; the Salvation Army; Catholic Charities Domestic Violence
Programs; and the W.A.I.T. House. In addition to awarding financial donations to
area charities, Zonta also gives in-kind donations to local soup kitchens.
The event includes free refreshments, finger sandwiches and desserts. For more
information, call Joanne Collins, vice president of Zonta and chairperson of the
Breast Cancer Awareness Night, at (518) 792-9115.
